the bad news: cold sores are the result of a viral infection that is related to but not the same as herpes. if you get cold sores, this means you are infected. it lies dormant until your immune system dips down. so long as you are careful not to spread the infection to your eyes or genitals, this is as bad as it gets. as far as cures go, i don’t think there are any. i use zovirax cream. zovirax also have handy new plastic patches that help conceal the sore and stop it spreading. if you want to prevent spreading the sore : wash your hands whenever you touch the area around your mouth; never pick or scratch the sore; use a treatment as early as possible (keep one in the medicine cabinet or in your desk at work).
the best way to prevent them coming back is to keep your immune system strong. eat a nutritious diet and get 8 hours sleep a night.
also talk to a pharmacist for advice. they know best.
your parents should be giving you more positive support instead of bugging you. don’t forget that stress can have an impact on your immune system too, so stop worrying about it.

Cold sores are HSV-1, genital herpes is HSV-2. Some people with one or both of these viruses NEVER show any symptoms nor have an actual outbreak, yet they are fully capable of spreading the disease.

Also, cold sores on the mouth can be spread to another person’s genitals via oral sex, so it’s possible to have HSV-1 genitally as well as hsv-2 orally.

The only way to know for sure is to be tested -and it can take up to 4 months after exposure for your body to create the antibodies that the test recognizes. Note that the basic STD test does NOT include testing for HSV!! you must specifically ask for hsv test in addition to basic std’s they test for. This is probably part of the reason these diseases are so rampant!

I recommend drinking cold milk or holding an ice block to it every few hours. This should help keep it moisturized and reduce the blister size.

And have a good time at your dad’s wedding :)

If the above doesnt work, you could always put a patch on it and cover it with lipstick/foundation.

I have always used alcohol and i am not talking jack, pure alcohol will dry it up and it usually goes away within a day if used all the time. apply with Q-tip and keep it dry. If it gets wet it will kep getting bigger and bigger. I get at least three a year and can tell when they are coming and i use alcohol as soon as the first little bump pops up.
P.S. if it is really big, it will burn a little.

No ice, Ice only eases the pain. It causes the blisters to dry up and sometimes bleed. I forgot to mention that ive been dealing with these all my life. Im using carmex right now, it stops the tingling and itching but the swelling is whats getting to me!

All cold sores are caused by the herpes virus and you cannot get rid of them for good. Once you have the herpes virus you have it for life. Once the cold sore has erupted, it will have to run its course. There is only one quick treatment for cold sores, and that is Valtrex, but unless you already have a prescription for it, it won’t work well for this cold sore. There is no over-the-counter medication or home remedy that cures cold sores, but Valtrex, which is an anti-viral medication, will make them go away much faster, and as a result of taking this medication you will have far fewer outbreaks of cold sores. It was intended for genital herpes, but cold sores are caused by the same family of viruses, and Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks. None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment Zovirax, and certainly not Abreva or anything else. Ask your doctor about it to see if you would be a good candidate for this medication.

Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene. cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.
