   LYSINE. It comes in vitamin AND ointment form. At Walgreens for sure. Get both & dose yourself good with the vitamins & keep applying cream.

   While it will not PREVENT, it will make the cold sore not last as long, and it will be less painful.

   If you are referring to a regular "cold sore" which occurs around the mouth, the old saying is that it takes about a week to heal on its own, and 7 days with treatment.
   Keep it moist, for extreme cold sores you can go to a doctor and get an oral anti-herpes type medication or a topical one. Sometimes that takes the stinging and pain out and lessens the severity. But that needs to be done at the onset of the cold sore, or you’re wasting your money.

   cold and cold sore are not the same. The 7 day or one week saying refers to the common cold. The Lysine answer is the correct one, it is an anti-viral and is well known to be the first choice for herpes simplex-the cold sore virus
