I get cold sores and I know that I’ve got it from my family. However, is it possible that I don’t have an STD because I only get them rarely when it’s really cold out and my lips are chapped. If this does mean I have the virus, if I ever get sexually active does this mean I have to tell my partner that I have this STD because it is illegal in some states to do anything if you don’t tell your partner about it.

If you get cold sores, then you have the herpes virus, oral herpes. Oral herpes is not an STD in that sense. Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene. Cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.

First of all, incest is bad. Second of all you have herpes one and it will be spread to anyone you kiss or give oral sex to. You probably have an STD, take care of that shit.

    yes

cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus.
almost never is this transmitted by sexual activity, however – it was transmitted to you when you were a baby and your grandmother kissed you at a time when she was shedding virus.

    it is totally unimportant –
about 60% of the adult population of the united states is carrying this virus, and many of them have never had a single cold sore.

stop considering this a sexually transmitted disease – it isn’t. I would not recommend discussing this with women on the first date – first of all because you can’t give it to the 2/3 of women who are already carrying it. Sure it’s nice of you to discuss this before you have intimate contact, but who cares? My wife gets frequent cold sores – it never entered my mind once that this had any importance at all while we were dating.

Just avoid direct contact (kissing and oral sex) while you have an active sore.
