So my friend has cold sores and recently while we were talking he accidentally spit on my eyelid, a very tiny drop. And the cold sores weren’t present then but I’m wondering if anyone knows if I can get ocular herpes from this. Please help.

Hi there.Cold sores are most infectious when the blisters are newly formed, that is for the first 1-2 days of an outbreak. This is the best time to swab a cold sore if laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis is required. Once the sore has formed a dry scab, infectivity is low and HSV usually cannot be recovered from the sore at this stage.

Transmission
Spread occurs by close physical contact between an infected and a previously uninfected person. Infection is most commonly acquired as a baby or infant from contact with relatives (kissing). The source does not always have typical cold sore symptoms at the time of transmission. For instance, virus is often shed from the saliva before or while the blisters are present. It is also possible to shed infectious virus particles without lesions or symptoms. When the virus is transmitted, the newly infected person is usually asymptomatic but may occasionally get symptoms of a primary infection around and inside the mouth (gingivostomatitis) lasting up to three weeks

you could prob get somthing if it actually went into your eyes. if it just lied on the skin and wiped it off you should be fine(i hoped you washed your hands)

It just happens. They can happen from you being sick, or because maybe you kissed someone. I personally have had many cold sores in my time, and it bothers me too, but I really wouldn’t be able to tell you the real source.

Very unlikely. Generally you need direct contact to spread a herpes virus. Had he kissed you on the eyelid and you rubbed your eye you could contract it. (Happened to someone I know!) Herpes on the eyeball itself needs immediate attention or it can lead to serious vision problems.
    I wouldn’t worry if I were you.

FYI for some of your respondents: Cold sores are a herpes virus that can be spread to the genitals through oral sex and visa versa. The sores do go away but the virus never leaves your system and is easily spread through direct contact. While it won’t kill you, it is a big deal unless you like having sores. If you carry ANY herpes virus, please be responsible. Be well.

    Nah, you are good.
Cold sores are generally contracted from skin to skin contact with an infected area. For example, if someone has a cold sore on their lip they can pass on the virus to another person’s mouth through kissing… wich you didn’t, so stop worrying about it. I don’t think it even affects the eye.
I know for a fact it is usually confined to the mouth area (particularly on and around the lip). Less commonly above the mouth, the nose, nostrils, cheek or chin.

cold sores does not necessarily mean you have herpes. my wife is pregnant, she had 2 cold sores with the last 8 months. i asked the doc whats that she said its due to stress. anyway no you cant just like any other std the virus dies when it hits the air. you’ll be fine dont be paranoid

Not likely. It would have had to come into contact with the mucous membrane or inside of your eye.
Even then, you probably would not have contracted herpies.
    Relax. You will be okay.

I get cold sores every now and then, and have noticed that when I get one it means I will soon have an actual cold (eg get sick.) You can get them from drinking after someone or kissing or whatever, but they will definetly show up when your immune system is down. So drink your Orange Juice everyday…your body cant store vitamin C.I dont think you can get them on your eyelids…relax.
